Wedding Gown Preservation and Restoration

If you choose to package your gown at home we recommend you use a large bag long enough for the gown to stretch out while traveling.  If you do not have a bag, stuff the bodice with as much tissue as possible and buffer the folds of the gown's skirt with still more tissue. Use one large sheet (fitted sheet works best) to cover the front of the gown and another one to cover the back and then pin the sheets together.

If you are preparing to ship your gown use a large box about one-third of the length of the front of your gown.

Line the box with tissue and lay the gown over it--face down.

Make sure you have the gown centered in the box and that the part that is face down is spread flat so there are no creases or folds.

Beginning at the side seams, fold the skirt lengthwise over bunched tissue until the skirt is no wider than the box.

Then add more tissue and fold the bottom of skirt into the box.

Fold the top of the gown over into the box. The top of the gown will now be facing up.

Use more tissue to stuff the bodice and cushion anything else such as bows or sleeves that should be protected.  The dress should not move in the box even when shaken.

Shores Fine Drycleaning now offers destination wedding kits to brides who travel with their gowns. Destination weddings are the fastest growing segment of the bridal market, and nearly 20% of all brides travel to an out-of-town wedding site. Our kit is especially useful to brides who fly to the wedding site because it can be carried on board.

Specially designed to fit into the overhead space above the seats on airplanes, the Destination Wedding Kit does not need to be checked with luggage that can get lost when changing planes because it can go through security with the bride when she boards the plane.

The Kit
The kit comes with a 20” x 17” x 7” acid-free container, acid-free paper for packing, packing instructions, a stain stick for wedding-day emergencies, and a sturdy shipping carton.

The Carton
The carton has a handle for easy carrying on and off the plane, and the packing instructions include a coupon worth $35 toward the cost of cleaning and preserving the gown after the wedding.

Shores Fine Dry Cleaning understands that whether you are headed half way around the world or only to the church down the road, you want your gown to look pristine and fresh for the ceremony. Here are some tricks to help you and your gown travel safely!

Having your gown professionally pressed and packaged is highly recommended.   After being delicately pressed, Shores can protect your gown by placing it in a custom cut garment bag and stuffing it with a bust form plus lots of tissue to keep the gown from being crushed while it travels. The gown should hang so the bodice is facing the car door, and the bust form and tissue will protect the bodice from wrinkling.

Pretty much the same advice applies to water travel because you can carry your gown with you when you go on board. And most cruise lines offer pressing services!

Shores can prepare your gown for shipping and air travel for additional fee.  After pressing,  Shores will safely package your gown with acid free tissue and secure it in a specially designed shipping container.  Unless your gown is very informal, most airlines insist you check your gown with your other luggage so you will need it packaged this way or placed in a large box or an extra suitcase.

Everyone dreams of the flawless wedding day, but be prepared just in case you hit a snag.

  • Have safety pins on hand so you’re prepared for broken bustle loops, torn straps or broken zippers.  We don’t recommend sticky tape or staples for risk of ruining the fabric, but in a pinch they are effective.
  • Know your wedding gown fabric in case of a spill.  Stains are more easily removed from synthetic fibers such as polyester, than natural fibers like silk. Regardless Shores recommends that unless the stain is large and noticeable that you leave it alone.
  • On synthetic gowns if you must try removal, and the stain is water soluble (coffee, mud, blood, tea) dab the spot gently with cool water and air dry.  Do not rub it.
  • CAUTION: silks and rayon’s, particularly silk and rayon velvets, are water-sensitive, and you may have permanent water spots.
  • Camouflage spots with something white and harmless like baking soda, cornstarch or baby powder
  • Grease, lipstick, and make-up can only be dissolved by solvents like lighter fluid.  However solvents can also dissolve dyes, so test an unseen area.  Again, Shores recommends leaving these stains alone until you can seek professional help.
  • Order our Perfect Day Emergency Care Kit that includes pins, needles and thread, solvent, scissors buttons, blotting towels

  • Hang your gown in the bathroom, turn the shower to hot, close the door, and let the shower run until the room is filled with steam, which relaxes most creases.
  • Invest in a portable hand steamer you can use whenever you travel. Guard against spotting water-sensitive fabrics such as silk by wrapping the head of the steamer in a small towel.

Of course, the easiest solution to the wrinkle problem is to have your gown professionally pressed once you arrive at your destination.  Shores will often offer to press your gown for free if we will be preserving the gown after the wedding.  If your wedding is out of town, call 800-501-5005 to locate a wedding gown specialist near your destination.
