Three Dry Cleaning Myths Debunked

What you don’t know about dry cleaning might amaze you.

Here are a few dry cleaning myths that have been debunked:

  1. “Dry Clean Only” can also mean hand wash in mild detergent and lay flat to dry. This includes cashmere. You should never place items with a dry clean only label into the dryer nor hang them up. Therefore, if don’t have the space for air drying after hand washing, then you should do exactly what the labels states: Dry clean only.
  2. “Store your cleaned items in the dry cleaning bags” is another myth to which you should not adhere. Storing clothes in these bags means the air inside is trapped so the potential for oxidation and causing stains to darken is increased. Plus, you’ll want the chemical scent to dissipate before you wear your garment.
  3. “Excessive dry cleaning will ruin your clothes.” The truth is that many fabrics are better cared for by dry cleaning than by washing. Natural fibers such as wool and silk can shrink when washed with water. Even man-made fibers such as polyester fare better if dry cleaned. Machine washing in water results in items of clothing being rubbed together which, over time, can weaken the fibers and loosen the seams. Further, the use of laundry detergents not only weakens the fibers but fades the colors as well.
