Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

This is the time of year when I complain (a lot) about having nothing to wear.  The first problem is that the days start out chilly, and then by the middle of the afternoon, you’re too warm.  Then I still have my mother’s voice repeating in my head things like “no white or summer dresses after Labor Day.”  But the truth is, there are really no steadfast rules when it comes to fashion, so here are 5 tips to help us all as we transition our wardrobes from warm weather to cooler weather.

  • Add a dark color blazer over the top of a sleeveless dress, jumpsuit, or a skirt and blouse. The nice thing about a blazer is that it is appropriate for office wear while still being cute and stylish enough to wear out to dinner.
  • Put away your strappy sandals and replace them with closed-toe booties, pumps, or loafers. Not only are they in tune with the season, you can also avoid having cold toes.
  • Break out your tights. Many of my above-knee dresses are appropriate to transition into fall, but my legs get cold; so that I can keep wearing some of my favorite dresses a little longer, I simply pair them with either black or opaque tights and a pair of closed-toe shoes.
  • Accessorize for both warmth and style. By simply adding a stylish hat, a cashmere scarf, and a pair of tall leather boots, you’ll both fit in with the season while avoiding a chill.
  • If all else fails, layer. Besides adding tights, this is the one I use the most.By adding a turtleneck and tights to a sundress or a cardigan to a pair of slacks and a blouse, I can keep some of my favorite summer pieces in circulation a bit longer.

If you have some tips that you use to help make the most out of your summer and fall clothes, we’d love to hear from you.  Just leave us a message on Facebook.
