Wedding Dress Etiquette

That saying “The Bride Can Wear Whatever She Wants” is only true to a point.  Below are some factors to consider.

  • Budget.  First, set an overall budget for your wedding.  Do research and determine what portion you will use toward your gown, and don’t forget to take into consideration alteration costs.  Most importantly, stick with that number. Don’t visit salons where the dresses are out of your price range, and don’t try on dresses that are higher than your budget.
  • Time of Day.  There are still etiquette rules out there that state weddings before 6:00 p.m. are considered daytime, while weddings after 6:00 p.m. are considered evening time.  Daytime weddings are generally informal, where a bride can wear a shorter dress or go without a veil.  Evening weddings are formal, and tradition calls for a floor-length gown and a full veil.
  • Venue.  If you’re getting married on the beach, you don’t want to wear a dress with a long train.  Likewise, if your reception is being held in a formal ballroom, a short, cocktail-type dress may seem out of place.  Consider the venue and choose a gown that will feel appropriate in the space.
  • Traditions.  Prior to the Victorian era, a bride’s gown could be any color except black or red.  Today, for weddings held in western countries, brides typically wear white gowns to represent a pure heart and childhood innocence.  While wedding dresses in China and northern parts of India, the traditional color is red.  Times change and the wedding industry continues to evolve, but there is something to be said about traditions.
  • Family and Spousal Preferences. You’re a bit daring and your spouse is ultra conservative.  Grandma and Grandpa will be there.  What will dad think?  There are some really beautiful gowns with plunging necklines, cutouts, and deep slits, but they could be upsetting to a special guest.  While you are wearing it, they will see it, so be mindful that it’s not just you and your spouse at the event.

No matter what style of dress you choose, Shores Fine Dry Cleaning is here to help you prepare for your big day, to remove any mishaps or spills that happen during the event, and to preserve your gown for a future generation.  Stop by one of our convenient locations if your gown needs alterationscleaning, or preservation.
