Wardrobe Maintenance Tips

I stopped purchasing fast-fashion garments a long time ago, so my wardrobe is filled mostly with classic, timeless, quality pieces that will last much longer than garments that are just thrown together quickly.  As a result, I want to provide the best care I can to prolong the usable life of my clothes.  Here are a few tips I use to get the most out of my wardrobe:

  • Clean garments regularly to keep them fresh and crisp.  Stains set with age, ground-in dirt and soil act as an abrasive causing damage to fibers, and insects are attracted to soiled clothing.
  • Clean matching pieces together, including household items, and don’t wear ensembles as separates.  Some dyes fade with repeated cleaning, causing color variances in matching items that are not cleaned and worn together.
  • Always blot a spill; never rub.  Rubbing stains can cause color loss and damage fabric.
  • Apply deodorant, lotion, hairspray, and perfume and allow to dry before dressing.  Some of these products could lead to color loss on clothing.
  • Always clean clothes before storing them away to prevent stains, color loss, and fabric damage.
  • Never store garments in an environment without temperature control.  Atmospheric conditions could contribute to discoloration and fabric damage.  When storing clothes in a closet, be sure to minimize direct sunlight and avoid prolonged exposure to bright, artificial light.
  • Don’t put off cleaning specialty items like evening wear and wedding dresses.  Give them the professional attention they deserve.

These basic clothing care tips will help your finest pieces looking their finest for years to come.  If you have garment care concerns, feel free to contact any one of our three locations.  That’s what Shores does best – solve fabric-related issues.
